I push the starter button and I hear the starter motor turning but the bendix does not engage the flywheel... or it is every so slightly engaging that it doesn't even sound like it's grinding.The John Deere 4020 uses a cartridge-style oil filter that is 6-7/16 inches tall and 3-1/8 inches wide. Gents, I have a 1964 4020 with the original 24 volt starter. Recently, after trying to start the tractor I noted the starter ran on after I released the key from the start position. The only way to stop the starter from turning was to removed the left battery terminal which resulted in a large spark. The 4020 with a gasoline engine was capable of 88 horsepower. This again was seven more than its forerunner, and suffered the same dip in fuel economy. The LP version of the 4020 received an increase in compression to provide over 90 horsepower, an increase of 10. This engine was an improvement in both power and economy.

Hello, I have a 1967 John Deere 4020. About a month ago, I decided that I would fix the fuel gauge on it. I bought a new sensor from AI Products and I bought a new gauge from them also. When I installed them, the gauge would show about 3/4 full whether it was empty or full.We have 9 3020-4020 tractors and they all act as you describe.We just live with it because after 1 minute all the hyd. work fine,part of farming with 40-50 year old tractors.I don't start in the mornings like I did 25 years ago either.LOL. Make sure the surfaces are clean and I roughed them up with some really coarse sandpaper so that the JB weld had something to bite. I have had them on for 6 months and so far so good. The later early models and on only have 2 reverse gears that are sped up. The the early ones, 1st reverse is the same speed as 3rd forward, 2nd reverse is like 5th and 3rd reverse is like 7th.
