Possession is clearly about Zulawski’s divorce. He has said it, and it is obvious. While Zulawski often uses doppelgängers in his films for different purposes, here it seems to clearly be symbolic, and this sort of symbol is widely used in this situation so I don’t think it’s worth spending a lot of time on.
