The Tonga Room is iconic, and as one of our first dinner dates, decades ago, was at a lovely “tiki restaurant” at Pontchartrain Beach, in New Orleans, visiting the Tonga Room was high on our list. We were not dining there, but off-property, but wanted to see, and experience the Tonga Room for wine, before departing for dinner.
Officially The Tonga Room and Hurricane Bar in the venerable Fairmont Hotel, this historic San Francisco hot spot does not disappoint! The decor is simply amazing. If it looks like a movie set, that’s because it was built in 1945 by a set designer from MGM Studios. The centerpiece is the 75-foot lagoon, originally known as the Fairmont Plunge.

Located at the bottom of the Fairmont Hotel, Tonga Room definitely is one of the fancier tiki bars within San Francisco.
