The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art is the oldest public art museum in America. It was founded in 1842 by Daniel Wadsworth (1771-1848), one of America’s first significant patrons of the arts. An amateur artist and architect, he was the son of Jeremiah Wadsworth, a Revolutionary War leader and a wealthy Hartford entrepreneur. Contemporary Art.
